College & Career Choice

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 | | 0 Comments

"...too many Asian parents think of college as a career builder rather than for pure, intellectual enrichment. There's a difference between a university (a research institute) and a vocational school; we're taught to "think" and we're expected to "do" on our own. Even with my technical major, I'm still taught more theory than practice, and I feel like that's pretty true for most undergraduate degrees. I don't think my parents can get out of the "college = qualification for career" mindset, although I wish they would."

International Secret Agents - Wong Fu Tour v.3.0

Thursday, April 09, 2009 | | 0 Comments

The third installment in my series.

The Infiltration Continues...

[The following footage is of a case designated "International Secret Agents" and was found in the area formerly known as "Palace of Fine Arts".]

Music by Far East Movement
"Millionaire feat. Jin"
"Animal"

*sigh*. Finally.
For some reason, I'm not very satisfied with the way I did this one. I originally planned on filming an opening sequence, but that fell through.

This is the original fb message I sent with the idea.
"are you guys busy tomorrow afternoon to film?
so I've got a short script. don't worry thu, there's little to no dialogue, (mostly because I can't write dialogue haha)
and the bulk of it is a chase scene.
Probably wanna film it like at the parking garage or something.

For some reason, I'm still bouncing ideas around, but
The only one that seems solid right now is, it opens with an intense chase scene, a la that big bang music video. My character is running/being chased, and it’s just super rapid quick cuts. He’s carrying an envelope or something, there’s a closeup on the ISA top secret logo. He Runs into an elevator. As the elevator doors open, you guys are outside the door, looking pissed.

My character has this “fuuuuuhh” expression. Then, panting and out of breath, he says
“Relax guys. I have 3 tickets.”

Fade out to ISA Logo, Music. etcetc"

It was very much inspired by the music video for Big Bang's "Lie". Youtube it. It's tight.

then I had so many different concepts running through my head on how to edit it, since I wanted this one to be vastly different than my first two Wong Fu vids (which were essentially, copies homages to wong fu's own tour vids.
I started to settle on a "cloverfield-esque" secret agent footage tape, but then it felt odd not having the intro montage like my other videos, so I added the trailer to the front, which kind of threw off the flow.
Also, a lot of footage is missing from other performances because I borrowed a friend's camera, which has super shitty battery life. So yeah. Parts of the footage had to be taken from Thu's digital camera. (for the parts that switch from widescreen to fullscreen.

So yeah. Could have been better. I think the trailer actually built up the hype too much. :(
Oh well.

Wong Fu Vid v.4! Coming Soon! (hopefully.)

Beijing

I looked through my photos again, and I really liked the composition of this one. Unfortunately I didn't take any footage while I was in Beijing, so there won't be a video like I did for HK.
Looks cool though.

HONG KONG: Sights, Sounds, life

Constructive Reflection? No Wai! Ya Wai!

Tonight, I slept 2 hours. Yeah. Sleep schedule's bad, I think we've established that. But much of that, I spent randomly clicking around, facebook/blogger/twitter/tumblr (oops secret project)/byteresawu.

What was that last bit? I found this blog of one of the co-founders of MyMomIsAFob.Com one of the funniest sites I've found in a while. And a lot of her stuff is interesting to me, for reasons that can be explained through my disclaimer. (it's on the side there.)
And as I was going through this web storm, I've been thinking about certain things. Like Twitter. I read their whole spiel, and what they are, and what I keep forgetting about websites are that, they're a business. (most of them at least.) And in this web 2.0 age, (I still don't know what that means. What was 1.0?) the old stereotypical office cubicle farms of the 90s are being replaced by new, "cooler", dare I say "hip" offices like this,

Yeah. Ignore the wrestling, check out the office. Those are the offices of CollegeHumor.
Yeah, the same CollegeHumor that makes those shorts you watch instead of studying for the midterms you have in the morning.

Yeah. they're a business. And 20-somethings make their LIVING working for that.
That sounds so cool.

I used to be terrified at the thought that I would be forced into a 9 to 5 job sitting in an office, but now, it doesn't sound so bad if these are the offices of tomorrow.
The other thing I worry about is what I'm doing.
I've always wanted to utilize my creative side in my job.
But I still have no idea what that job will be.

I should study for the chinese test I have on monday. crap.

HONG KONG: Sights, Sounds Life

HONG KONG: Sights, Sounds, Life from Erik Ho on Vimeo.

Just a bunch of random clips I edited together from my trip to Hong Kong. Nothing really planned, I just had a bunch of footage and nothing to do with them, so it's a little sketchy.

I didn't even have a video camera, these were all captured on my digital cam.

I just wish I had planned something more, maybe made a short, or a cheesy music video or something. Oh well. I'm definitely heading back.

Slight Revamp/Work

Woo.

Finally cleaned up the HTML coding a little bit, changed the spacing, and added a few things. Search bar, took a while to get right, but now it's awesome.

And thanks to Disqus the comments are a lot cooler.

I've had a lot of inspiration the past few days. (and a lot less sleep)
I still want to someday get a pretty decent online portfolio up.
But I'm also trying to revamp the filming crew I used to have with old friends.

Besides the upcoming International Secret Agents project,
I'm trying to undertake a few more.

That date isn't a release date, that's the date I hope to start filming. I just wanted to stick a date in there to fill out the teaser a little.

I also registered a tumblr to post the future videos on too.

maybe posting all of this will help motivate me to completely finish all of this.
