Here we go...

Here's a spin in the complete opposite direction.

Here my perception was that, once in college, you become overwhelmed with this brand new social circle and thus are forced (or some willingly) to push everyone else you knew out of your life. What scared me was that I knew it was incredibly likely, because I for one, have done this.
I even saw it as a culturally natural. There was a CollegeHumor short called 'Hardly Working: High School Friend" subtitled "Sometimes old and new friends don't mix", and in the comments below, there were things like "
Jake is such a tool, who hangs out with friends from high school?" and "everyone knows your high school friends just get boring and awkward compared to your college friends."
This was incredibly disheartening. These are friends that I've seen grow, and whom have seen me grown and mature to who I am today. And I'm supposed to just discard them in favor of new, "improved" ones? Well listen to me carefully. Fuck. That. Shit.

But now I've heard accounts in which people sometimes regret choosing their college because of the lack of old friends. I've seen someone regret choosing UCSD over COA/transfering to Berkeley. Or weekend visits from college that tell you,
"I just gotta face the fact that its not high school or summer anymore. I can't just pop in on a random weekend when people are still in school and expect them to spend quality time with me. Everyone has their own things to do and I'm just trying to jump in. "

This is something that was completely unexpected. A little more balance though, adding some weight to the opposite argument.

I'm still terrified of losing some close friends I have now,(please don't feed me cliché bullshit about, 'oh if you're close friends, you'll stay in touch'. I don't take empty comments like those seriously at all.) but what I hope for in College is meeting some great people, and bonding in the dorms. I hear about Steph in her dorm at Cal, and it's exactly what I want: staying up 'til 2am just hanging out in the hall with your floormates.

I do understand that eventually everyone has to move on though. I saw it clearly on my last visits to people in college. There were friends that I wanted to see, and spend all the time in the world with, but I couldn't expect them to drop everything they had just to up and entertain me for the day. People have work, friends, relationships, and here I am, just a kid from high school who can't seem to move on.

Oh well. As Abbie Hoffman said, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life."

"
I'm the first to know
My dearest friends

Even if your hope has burned with time
Anything that's dead shall be regrown
And your vicious pain, your warning sign
You will be fine

Here I am,
And here we go,
Life's waiting to begin
..."
